1 out of 4 of Alachua County's children are affected by poverty and live in food instable homes. Despite the resources of Free and Reduced lunch/breakfast, afterschool snacks, food stamps, and other programs that target hunger there are a signigicant number of food instable homes in the county. Food4Kids Backpack Program of North Florida, Inc. targets children who are "chronically hungry" and are at risk of not receiving food over the weekend.
Food4Kids Backpack Program of North Florida, Inc. is a registered non-profit organization with the State of Florida and is 100% volunteer run. Food4Kids Backpack Program provides food for these children over the weekends and during extended breaks from school when other resources are not available. Children who are referred into the program receive rolling backpacks filled with food (7 meals per child) every Friday. On Monday, the backpacks are returned to be refilled and redistributed at the end of the week.
